Honey, the product of industrious bees, is undoubtedly one of the healthiest foods on earth that offers countless health benefits. It can be used to treat various diseases and health conditions.
However, there are many fake honeys on the market, mislabeled and sold at low prices. More than 76 percent of all honey sold in markets has been infiltrated, according to a study by Food Safety News.
This process removes all impurities from the honey, including traces of pollen and wax.
Infiltration is said to be important in extending the shelf life of the product and preventing crystallization, but it also removes many of the benefits of preserving honey's beneficial properties.
Apparently, this serves to hide the geographical origin of honey. Chinese producers contaminated honey with illegal antibiotics and metals in order to import it.
It is for this reason that we should all avoid such honey, since in case of pollen contamination, it is vital to trace and analyze the origin of the product.
Here are a few ways to help you spot fake honey:
- If honey does not crystallize over time, it is fake.
- Add a spoonful of honey to a glass of water, and if it dissolves, it's fake.
- Add a few drops of vinegar to a glass of water and then add some honey. If the honey begins to foam, this is a clear sign that it has been adulterated with plaster.
- Light it with a match. If it ignites, it is pure, organic honey.
-Add some honey and a few drops of iodine to a glass of water. If the color of honey turns blue, it is mixed with cornstarch.
- Read the product label well. In case it contains high fructose or glucose corn syrup, avoid it.
Also, when buying honey, follow these tips:
- Some types of honey are high in low quality mead or are mixed with glucose.
- There is no pollen in McDonald's and KFC honey.
To get the full benefits of honey, always choose pure, organic, pollen-containing honey and it will give you countless health benefits.
