What is the function of your back? We need a butt not only to sit on it, or to catch the interested glances of the opposite sex. This body part can tell you quite a lot about your health. So, below we list eight facts that you should know about your buttocks.

1. The biggest muscle in your body.

The gluteal muscles (namely the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus) make up the largest and one of the strongest muscle groups in your body. If it wasn't for your buttocks, you wouldn't be able to stand, walk, and do many other things.

2. Your butt really needs exercise.

Did you know that strong glute muscles keep your spine healthy? Regular exercise (whatever type you prefer) plus glute workouts can benefit both your glutes and your back.

3. A big butt can mean a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes.

According to studies, women with a wider booty but a thinner waist have a lower risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol compared to women who carry most of their extra pounds around their waist.

4. Too much sitting on the toilet can contribute to the development of hemorrhoids.

Sitting on the toilet for too long puts pressure on your lower rectum, which can worsen hemorrhoid symptoms or even cause the condition if you don't already have one. Don't take your phone with you when you go to the toilet, and you'll be less likely to spend more time than you need sitting on the toilet.

5. Your ass loves gentle care.

The skin around the anus is very delicate, so it needs proper care. Here are some tips on how to do it right:

  • wash the anal area with regular, unscented soap and warm water;
  • do not rub too hard, as this can irritate the skin and cause itching;
  • wipe from front to back, especially if you are a woman;
  • Instead of wet wipes, use water-soaked toilet paper.

6. The most deadly skin cancer can appear on the butt.

Although this area is not normally exposed to the sun, melanoma can appear on (or between) the buttocks. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, for that matter. Thus, during your next skin exam of your own, check every area, including the parts of the body that don't get the sun.

7. Your butt can benefit from dietary fiber (but not too much).

Dietary fiber is good for gut health as it improves stool consistency. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and legumes are good sources of fiber. Just don't overdo it, especially if you haven't eaten a lot of fiber before; consuming too much fiber can cause bloating, gas, and constipation.

8. What should you pay close attention to when going to the toilet.

Many people don't bother to look at what they leave in the toilet before flushing. But it can say a lot about your health! If there is a persistent change in stool consistency, an unusual color (such as red, black, yellow, or greyish), mucus mixed with stool, or thin with a pencil, it's time to see a doctor. Such symptoms can be caused by many conditions (most of which are benign) and should be brought to the attention of a doctor in order to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.
